National Institute of Mental Health Invests in Research on Gut-Brain Connection
Lake Forest—October 12, 2015—The idea that intestinal bacteria affect mental health is gaining ground. Until several years ago, neuroscientists did not believe claims from dietary supplement companies that probiotics could benefit mental well-being. Now there is so much interest in the gut-brain connection that the U.S. National Institute of Mental Health spent one million dollars in 2014 on a research program aimed at the microbiome-brain connection. Neuroscientists presented their evidence for the link between gut health and brain function at an annual meeting in Washington, D.C. called “Gut Microbes and the Brain: Paradigm Shift in Neuroscience.”

Potential involvement of gut microbes in altering how the brain functions has been speculated for more than decade. A recent study showed that certain troubled children had higher levels of several harmful bacteria. Scientists have also discovered that in some children with difficulty in communications and social interactions, there were significantly reduced amounts of several types of gut microbes. Although there is limited information on the effects of diet, GI problems and microbiome profiles, the findings support the search for better understanding of the relationship between gut microbiota and behavior.”

Kimberly Lloyd, M.S. notes that the DIGESTIVE+++ formulation developed by LifePharm contains “a superior combination of prebiotics, probiotics and enzymes, which work together to increase the good bacteria that resides in the gut. This means you’re not only adding probiotics to the digestive system, but you are also helping them work more efficiently with the addition of prebiotics, which act as fuel for the probiotics. In addition, DIGESTIVE+++ provides the enzymes necessary for the body to digest food and absorb the nutrients.”

Ms. Lloyd continues, “The science behind how the brain and gut are interrelated is in its beginning stages, and new discoveries are being made. This is of special interest, because LifePharm has such a cutting edge product with DIGESTIVE+++. Although there is much research that is still inconclusive about the gut-brain connection, it can be stated with surety that the maintenance of overall health must include the smooth functioning of the entire digestive system.”
